How to Plan a One-Way Car Rental Across Tanzania

How to Plan a One-Way Car Rental Across Tanzania

One-way travel sounds pretty appealing when you're looking at a map of Tanzania.

Start in Arusha, do the safari, keep moving towards the coast and finish somewhere else. Why drive all the way back just to return the vehicle?

It can work really well. You just need to sort out a few things before you set off.

Know Where You're Starting — and Where You're Finishing

This sounds obvious, but the final drop-off can get overlooked when you're busy planning the fun parts.

Maybe you're collecting the car in Arusha and eventually heading to Dar es Salaam. Or you start in Moshi and want to finish around the Zanzibar connection.

Tell the rental company the full plan at the start.

Your route may change along the way, of course, but the basic pickup and return points need to be agreed beforehand. A one-way rental means the vehicle has to get back somehow, so there can be an extra charge for that.

Also, don't assume you can take the car wherever you like just because it's a 4x4. If you're going into national parks, remote areas or across a border, check first.

The Car Has to Suit the Whole Trip

This is where choosing a vehicle just because it looks good on the website can backfire a little.

A vehicle that feels great around Arusha or on the main roads may not be the one you want once the route gets rougher. Add camping equipment, luggage and a couple of passengers, and space starts becoming important too.

Before leaving, take a proper look around the vehicle. Check the tyres, bodywork, spare wheel and whatever equipment is included. If there's already a mark or scratch, mention it.

It takes a few minutes.

Better to spend those minutes at pickup than have a debate about it at drop-off.

What Happens at the End?

The final handover needs some thought too.

Where exactly is the vehicle being returned? At a hotel? An office? Somewhere near the airport? Are you expected to return it with a full tank?

And if your route ends in Zanzibar, remember that the car isn't simply travelling there with you. The mainland and island part of the journey needs to be arranged separately.

Ask about those details before the trip, including any one-way fee or other charges.

Would you rather not handle the driving for the longer parts of the journey? Car hire with a driver in Tanzania is another option, particularly for travellers with a packed route or several long driving days.

Rent-a-Car East Africa can arrange one-way rental journeys in Tanzania, including routes involving Arusha, Moshi, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar by prior arrangement.

A one-way trip can save you from covering the same road twice. Just get the return plan sorted before you get carried away with the itinerary. Once that's clear, the rest of the trip is a lot easier to enjoy.
