Rwanda Traffic Rules: 7 Laws Every Tourist Driver Must Know

So, you’ve secured your safari car rental in Rwanda and you are itching to see the gorillas. We get it. The excitement is real. But before you blast the music and hit the gas, we need to talk about the roads.

Rwanda isn’t like its neighbors. The streets are clean, the police are strict, and the rules are actually enforced. Seriously. You can’t just "talk your way out of a ticket" here.

If you want a smooth trip without paying fines, keep these seven rules in mind.

1. We Drive on the Right

This is the big one. If you are coming from Uganda, Kenya, or Tanzania, this will feel weird. Rwanda drives on the right-hand side of the road.

This means the steering wheel is on the left. It sounds simple, but we’ve seen plenty of tourists get confused at roundabouts. Take it slow. If you cross the border into Uganda later, remember to switch your brain (and your lane) back to the left!

2. Speed Limits Are Not Suggestions

In many countries, a "60" sign means "go 70." Not here.

• Towns/Cities: 40 km/h or 60 km/h (watch the signs).
• Rural Roads: Usually 80 km/h.
• National Parks: strictly 40 km/h.

Police use handheld speed guns everywhere, often hiding just around a bend. Plus, there are automated cameras in Kigali. Just stick to the limit. It’s not worth the hassle.

3. Respect the Zebra Crossings

In Kigali, pedestrians have the right of way. Always.

If you see someone stepping onto a zebra crossing, you stop. Immediately. Drivers here are incredibly respectful of this, and if you zoom past a pedestrian, a traffic officer will likely pull you over. It’s one of the quickest ways to get a fine.

4. Ditch the Phone

Don't text and drive. Don't call and drive. Even holding your phone to check Google Maps can get you in trouble.

If you need to check your route, pull over safely or have your passenger be the navigator. Hands-free kits are okay, but holding the device is a strict no-go.

5. Seatbelts are Mandatory for Everyone

This doesn’t just apply to the driver. Every single person in the car needs to buckle up. Yes, even the people in the back seat. Police often check cars at checkpoints to ensure all passengers are strapped in.

6. Give Moto-Taxis Space

You will see thousands of motorcycle taxis (motos) buzzing around. They are fast and can be unpredictable.

Give them plenty of room. Check your blind spots twice before changing lanes. They often weave through traffic, so stay predictable and use your indicators early.

7. Carry Your Papers

Always have your documents on you. You need your valid driver’s license (your home country's license is usually fine for short stays, or an International Driving Permit), your passport copy, and the car insurance papers we gave you.
