How Car Rental Works in Kenya: A Guide for Newbies

How Car Rental Works in Kenya: A Guide for Newbies

So you just landed at the airport in Nairobi. Its hot, busy and the adventure is about to start. You probably thinking about how to get around. Sure, public transport is cheap but you can’t exactly tell the bus driver to stop because you saw a lion. That’s why renting your own ride is the best way to see the country.

If you are planning to hire a safari car in Kenya, its not as hard as it looks online. But there is some stuff you got to know before you hit the road. Here is the real deal for first timers.

Choosing the Right Car (Important!)

Okay, listen. The roads here are... interesting. If you are just driving around the city or going to the beach, a simple RAV4 is fine. It handles the potholes okay and is easy to park.

But if you want to go to the big parks like Maasai Mara, you need something stronger. At Rent a Car East Africa, we always tell people to grab a Land Cruiser. The roads in the bush are super bumpy (we call it the "African Massage") and a small car just won’t make it. You don't want to get stuck in the mud in the middle of nowhere, trust me.

The Paperwork part

You don’t need a ton of documents. Your driving license from back home is usually fine as long as it’s in English. If not, just bring an international permit.

Most places need you to be over 23. When you pick up the car, we do a quick check with you. Look at the tires, check the AC works. It takes like 10 minutes and then you are free to go.

Drive Yourself or Get a Driver?

This is the big question. Driving yourself is cool because you have total freedom. You can leave when you want, stop for snacks, whatever.

But honestly, driving in Nairobi can be crazy. The local buses (matatus) drive very fast and cut you off. If you are not used to driving on the left or dodging traffic, it might be better to get a driver. When you hire a safari car in Kenya from us, you can ask for a driver too. It cost a little extra but they know where all the animals are hiding, so its worth it.

Watch out for Bumps

One last thing. The speed bumps here are HUGE. And sometimes the paint has faded so you dont see them until its too late. Drive slow. Also, gas stations can be far apart when you leave the city. If you see a Shell or Total, just fill up.

Ready to go? A road trip in Kenya is something you wont forget. Whether you want a big Land Cruiser with a tent on top or just a simple SUV, Rent a Car East Africa can help you out. Just remember to drive carefully and enjoy the views!
